My thesis examined phosphorus (P) pollution in two agricultural watersheds in Kansas with different levels of animal farming: Upper West Emma Creek (UWEC) and Red Rock Creek (RRC). I analyzed P dynamics in stream sediments and upland soils to assess their contribution to water quality degradation.
Results showed that stream banks, especially in UWEC, were major in-stream P sources due to erosion, while upland soils—particularly manure-amended fields—were key contributors in RRC. During storm events, dissolved P levels were higher in RRC, indicating greater upland impact. The study concluded that reducing P loading requires bank stabilization in UWEC and upland best management practices in RRC to mitigate eutrophication risks and protect water quality.
